Magnetobiostratigraphy of the continental Paleocene upper Coalspur and Paskapoo formations near Hinton, Alberta

Une étude intégrée magnétostratigraphique et palynostratigraphique du continental, particulièrement du Coalspur supérieur d’âge Paléocène inférieur, et de la formation du Paskapoo d’âge Paléocène moyen à supérieur, a été conduite dans la région de Coal Valley, à Hinton, dans le centre ouest de l’Alberta. Des prélèvements d’échantillons magnétostratigraphiques ont été effectués dans 2 carottes et un affleurement de la Mine de Coal Valley, dans une coupe routière du Coalspur, dans la carrière de la mine de Bryan Creek proche de Robb, dans 13 localisations d’affleurements, et dans 4 carottes venant de la région montagnarde de Hinton-Obed (au total 313 échantillons). Environ 300 échantillons palynostratigraphiques ont été prélevés à partir de carottes et d’affleurements à l’intérieur de la mine de Coal Valley, de la coupe routière du Coalspur, de la mine de Bryan Creek, de la région d’Hinton, de la montagne d’Obed et d’autres endroits avoisinants. Les localités de ces échantillons ont été adaptées structurellement à une section composite du Paléocène de la limite du Crétacé-Tertiaire jusqu’au sommet de la couche de houille n° 1de la Mine de la montagne d’Obed, totalisant environ 300 m du Coalspur supérieur et environ 770 m de la formation Paskapoo. La section englobe des parties de magnétozones de 29r à 24r et des palynoznes Wodehouseia spinata, des souszones Aquilapollenites reticulatus à travers la zone de Pistillipollenites mcgregorii. Les taux d’accumulation de sédiments préservés s’élèvent à environ 250 m par millions d’années, mais affichent une moyenne bien inférieure en raison d’hiatus. Ces hiatus impliquent une omission de parties de magnétochrones de 28r, 28n et 27r dans la zone houillère d’Arbour-Val d’Or, de 27n à la base de Paskapoo, et de 26n dans le Paskapoo supérieur, totalisant au moins 2.2 millions d’années.
