Dr. Benoît Beauchamp and Dr. Gerry Reinson

As Co-Chairs of the 2007 Gussow Conference, "Arctic Energy Exploration: Present and Future Development", Dr. Benoît Beauchamp and Dr.Gerry Reinson were instrumental in planning, organizing and executing a broad and comprehensive program with 25 experts addressing 120 participants. This two day Conference, held at the Banff Centre, covered topics as diverse as conventional and unconventional resource potential, the proposed MacKenzie Valley Pipeline, challenges to development, environmental and regulatory issues, stakeholder relations, community consultations, climate change impact and Arctic sovereignty. The Conference ended with an expert panel discussion centered on impediments to Arctic development. As Co-Chairs, Benoît and Gerry developed the theme of the Conference, invited key experts to present, organized the schedule, secured sponsorship funding and prepared the budget. Of particular note, this Conference was given significant coverage by local and national media, presenting the CSPG in a positive light. CSPG support staff sincerely acknowledges Benoît and Gerry as outstanding Co-Chairs who established a compelling vision, sets clear goals, delegated well and were always available for help and consultation. Feedback from attendees on all aspects was very positive. By any standard, this was a very successful Gussow Conference.

Dr. Benoît Beauchamp is the Executive Director of the Arctic Institute of North America. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in geology from the Université de Montréal and his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary. Prior to his position as Executive Director, he had a long and distinguished career with the Geological Survey of Canada leading dozens of scientific expeditions to Canada’s high Arctic.
